James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov flew in from Philadelphia this summer to co-host the inaugural International Maccabi Culinary Competition at Tel Aviv’s Bishulim Culinary School, in conjunction with the 20th Maccabiah World Games in Israel, involving 9,500 athletes from 80 countries.

Teams of professional chefs from Australia, Gibraltar, Israel, Italy, Spain and the United States used Israeli produce, meat and fish to prepare five-course meals showcasing the cuisine of their home countries.

A panel of chefs, hospitality professionals and food journalists, including Israeli chef Erez Komarovsky, judged the entries for creativity, originality, flavor and presentation. The Australians clinched the gold medal, the Americans got the silver and the bronze went to the Israeli team, which was comprised of Arab and Jewish chefs.
