The annual ‘Cycling for Peace’ ride has come full circle as Gilad Shalit takes the lead in tomorrow’s event (May 4).

Last year’s happening was dedicated to the release of Shalit, who was kidnapped by Hamas. This year, he’s set to lead the 35-km ride.

“Last year’s race called for Gilad’s release, so this year we’re proud to hold an event with his participation,” Acre (Acco) Mayor Shimon Lankry said.

The Acre Municipality is organizing the event in collaboration with the city’s sports department and International Center for Peace and other sponsors.

The route for the 2012 ride is set to depart from Shalit’s home in Mitzpe Hila and continue to the Lily Sharon Park in Acre.

Organizers say this will be Shalit’s first opportunity to meet the crowds who worked for his release.

Shalit is to receive an honorary plaque at the finish line.
