Israel already has an American football league, and now the roster of imported contact sports has doubled with the introduction of roller derby, an all-female contact game played on roller skates.
“Israeli women have what it takes,” says founder Bar Eldar confidently.
Thunder Girl Pnina Rosendoom calls the game “friendly violence,” adding that the Tel Aviv-based team just wants to score points, as in any other sport.
The team includes students and career women, married and single women who were intrigued by the revival of roller derby around the world. They hope that one day they’ll attract enough fans to pack Israeli arenas.
