West Coast Salmon, an industrial 15,000-ton Atlantic salmon production facility in Reno, Nevada, has secured first-stage investment to implement Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology for land-based aquaculture from AquaMaof Aquaculture Technologies in Israel.
The first phase of the project is expected to be operation in the second half of 2024.
Hallvard Muri, chairman of Norway-based West Coast Salmon AS, said the company chose AquaMao “to achieve our goal of becoming the leading US West Coast provider of high-quality sustainably raised Atlantic salmon.”
David Hazut, CEO of AquaMaof, said the technology enables clean seafood production in a closed, bio-secured, disease-free environment, “as well as enabling self-sufficiency in a time of disrupted food production and supply chain.”
AquaMaof’s RAS technology allows fish farming facilities to be located adjacent to large cities, which reduces transportation costs and associated environmental impact. The technology includes proprietary water-recycling techniques with minimum discharge and low power consumption, and enables year-round harvest.
Other projects currently under development by AquaMaof, with a combined capacity of approximately 75,000 tons, include Grieg NL’s super smolt facility in Canada; and salmon projects in Japan, France, East Coast US, Germany and Russia, among others.
