The Design Museum of Holon will be the first museum for contemporary design in Israel and one of just a few in the world. Created by internationally renowned Israeli architect Ron Arad, the building itself is considered a work of art.
The opening exhibition, The State of Things: Design and the 21st Century, will run from March 4 to May 14. It will present over one hundred objects, which collectively represent issues of the practice, consumption and cultural impact of contemporary international design.
Leading international curators and writers – Dr. Barbara J. Bloemink (Head Curator), Ms. Julie Lasky, Mr. Aric Chen and Mr. Garth Walker, were invited by the city of Holon to curate the opening exhibition.
Eight categories including: New Essentialism, Mutant Remix, Of the Body, Social Anxiety, Beyond the Designer, Super Beauty, Craft Economy and Design Lab will form the exhibition which will showcase objects ranging from ordinary household items such as plastic chairs and printed wallpaper to life-enhancing and life-saving technologies, such as a jewel-like hearing aid and an efficient water filtration device.
All of the objects, through either the materials employed, the concepts conveyed, or the uses intended, were chosen to reflect modern times.
