The Israeli and American national academies of science signed a cooperation agreement in Jerusalem on April 7, a move set to further scientific research in both countries.

The ceremony was held at President Reuven Rivlin’s Jerusalem residence. The Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities was represented by its president, Prof. Nili Cohen, while the American National Academy of Sciences was represented by its president, Prof. Marcia McNutt.

“Today marks the beginning of an official partnership between our national academies, in the hope of many more decades of mutual collaboration,” Rivlin said. “The friendship between our two countries is deep and long-lasting. Israel and the US are at the forefront of scientific research, each in its own right. Our joined efforts are sure to bring us incredible discoveries.”

Founded in 1961, the Israeli Academy of Sciences and Humanities is the senior body in the Israeli scientific community. It brings together the best researchers in the country to advance scientific discovery, advise the government on national science policy and planning, cooperate with overseas partners and represent Israeli science in the international arena.

The American National Academy of Sciences, founded in 1863, is based in Washington DC and is committed to furthering science in the United States. It provides independent, objective advice to the nation on matters related to science and technology and gives scientific advice to the government.

Rivlin noted that the agreement was co-signed by leading female researchers.

“Sitting here with us today are the presidents of the Israeli and American national academies,” he said. “Both are well-known researchers, highly respected in their fields, and both are women. A hundred years ago, no one would have thought this to be possible. It makes me proud to know that the Israeli and American national academies share a commitment to increase diversity in academia.”
