Israel is bringing home five medals, a new record for this country, from the European Athletics Competition in Munich, August 15-21.

The national men’s marathon team – comprised of Maru Teferi, Gashau Ayale, Omer Ramon, Yimer Getahun and Girmaw Amare — won a gold medal on the first day of the competition.

In the men’s marathon, Teferi won a silver medal and Ayale won bronze. Lonah Chemtai Salpeter took a bronze medal in the women’s 10,000-meter run and Hanna Minenko won a bronze medal in the women’s triple jump event.

Israel finished in 14th place overall among 27 countries.

Ami Baran, head of the Israeli Athletics Association, https://iaa.co.il/ noted how moved he felt to see Israelis winning medals in Munich almost exactly 50 years after Arab terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in the same city.

Ayala added: “After 50 years, with what happened here, winning a medal and waving the Israeli flag is so sweet. I worked on it a lot and came with an open mind. I just flowed with the run and it worked out.”
