The piles of green avocados and yellow bananas now on display at Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda market will be sidelined tomorrow (September 21) by a different palette of colors. The ‘Tabula Rasa’ urban art project will transform the shuk’s merchants into artists for a day.

The special art workshop in the shuk is part of a plan to redecorate the shuk. Earlier this month some 20 visual artists, painters, sculptors, photographers and graphic artists created works inspired by the marketplace for the marketplace.

There’s a statue of the city’s legendary mayor Teddy Kolek made from recycled bottle caps, self-portraits, and a huge backgammon board. The works will stay up for a year.

Artist and project curator, Itamar Paloge, will run tomorrow’s workshop for the merchants.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat will also take part in the project.
