StoreDot wows world with 30-second phone charger

Israeli startup reveals prototype of charging device and says it could charge laptops in minutes in the future.

Israeli startup StoreDot recently grabbed the world’s attention at Microsoft’s Think Next conference in Tel Aviv when it showed off a technology prototype that could eventually recharge mobile phones in just 30 seconds.

The company demonstrated its new battery and charging technology on a Galaxy S4 at the conference.

StoreDot, which came out of the Tel Aviv University’s nanotechnology department, is “a nanotechnology company with a ground-breaking technology, based on its discovery of new generation, self-assembled nanodots of biological origin,” according to its website.

The company says its amazing new technology is still being fine-tuned and will only start to change how we recharge mobile devices in 2016. But StoreDot is eyeing future markets, saying its system will overthrow how we recharge laptops (from hours to a few minutes).

“In essence, what we have developed is a new generation of an electrode with new materials – we call it MFE – Multi Function Electrode. One side acts like a Supercapacitor (very fast charging), and the other is like a Lithium electrode (slow discharge). The electrolyte is modified as well with our nanobots in order to allow for the multifunction electrode to be effective …. we are aiming for the same capacity as a Li-on battery,” StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf told The Next Web.

In related news, StoreDot is one of 30 Israeli companies vying for the 2014 Red Herring Top 100 Europe Award.

“This year was rewarding, beyond all expectations” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring.

“The global economic situation has abated and there are many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products. We had a very difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. STOREDOT LTD. shows great promise and therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we’re faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners of Red Herring Europe. We know that the 2014 crop will grow into some amazing companies that are sure to make an impact.”
