As anyone who has ever visited Israel will understand, food lies at the heart of life here. It’s no surprise then that when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, in the worst and most barbaric terror attack in the country’s history, causing Israel to declare war, chefs from Tel Aviv decided that the best way they could help the war effort was to make food. Every day, 15 chefs and countless volunteers come together at the ASIF Culinary Institute in Tel Aviv, to make over 2,000 meals for soldiers, the injured in hospital and the many displaced people now in Israel. “We make the menu choices not only for physical nourishment but also as comfort food for the soul,” says one of the chefs. It’s just one of many incredible volunteer projects going on across Israel right now, and a reminder that in a crisis, Israelis will pull together. Nicky Blackburn |
