Social and political polarization has become an increasingly significant and pressing issue worldwide, and Israel unfortunately is no exception. Government efforts to overhaul Israel’s judiciary, which began in January, have created a tear in society here that is widening day by day, ripping apart the cohesion of families, friends, government institutions and the military. But Israelis are nothing if not resilient, and even in a crisis you will find groups already at work to bring conflicted sides together. The Fourth Quarter aims to do just that. Founded before the current crisis began, the grassroots organization is now growing fast and has set itself an ambitious goal to bring the opposing sides together, through parlor meetings and seminars, and build a vital base of moderates who understand one another. “We want to demolish the echo chambers,” says Yoav Heller, chairperson of the nonprofit. “People are searching for hope.” It’s a story that can inspire people not just in Israel, but all over the world. Thanks to ISRAEL21c reporter Naama Barak, for bringing it to the light. Nicky Blackburn |
