Sigdiada Festival poster
Top Ethiopian artists and celebrities are set to show off their culture at this week’s first Sigdiada event in Tel Aviv. Whereas Sigd – a holiday celebrated by the Ethiopian Jewish community – is usually a closed celebration for members of the community, the new happening is aimed at the general public.

Indie soul singer Ester Rada, jazz musician/singer Shabate, reggae band Zvuloon Dub System, actor Shay Fredo, and Elmaz Dance Troupe are a sampling of the packed line up set for the event at Israel’s National Theater this Friday (October 18, 2013).

There will be a fashion show of ethnic clothing, film screenings, and lectures. Food stalls will offer traditional injera flatbread, Ethiopian beer and Ethiopian coffee.

Organizers of the happening say they hope to introduce the general public to the ancient traditions and culture of the Ethiopian Jewish community.
