Ohad Naharin, one of Israel’s best known choreographers, will receive an honorary doctorate from the Juilliard School in New York for his work as head of the Batsheva Dance Company.

The Mizra kibbutz-born dancer took up the post as Batsheva’s artistic director back in 1990 and reinvigorated its repertory with his captivating choreography.

During his tenure with the company, Naharin has choreographed over 20 works for Batsheva and its junior division, Batsheva Ensemble.

Naharin is also famed for creating his own movement language technique known as Gaga.

In the past, Naharin has received honorary degrees from the Weizman Institute of Scienceand the Hebrew University. He will receive the honorary doctorate from Juilliard in May 2013.
