Music in Israel has always been a fundamental part of national identity. Since the country’s establishment, Hebrew songs and public singalongs have brought people together, helping to shape the country and culture.

Israeli music is made up of so many genres, styles and eras, often making it hard to define. From classic folk songs to Middle Eastern-inspired Mizrahi, to modern hip hop beats, Israeli music offers something that every kind of music-lover can enjoy.

In honor of its upcoming 70th anniversary, Israel is planning all sorts of ways to celebrate – including through song. Concerts featuring today’s pop stars and Israeli music icons are planned around the country, including the performance of a special updated version of “Hallelujah,” which landed Israel first place in the 1979 Eurovision competition.

The new version, sung by its original performer Gali Atari and current pop star Eden Ben-Zaken, will be performed at official state celebrations in Jerusalem.

Those who can’t make it to Israel for the festivities can still celebrate from wherever they are in the world, thanks to ISRAEL21c’s Independence Day Spotify playlist. The 17-song compilation includes hits from Israeli singers, old and new, that are sure to be heard during Independence Day parties throughout the country.
