Sculptures take on a life of their own in Rehovot

You can’t climb these statues, but you can talk to them. That’s because the “statues” in Rehovot’s third annual International Live Statue Festival were really people underneath layers of makeup and intricate costumes.
The three-day event in July featured 120 displays, including 12 artists chosen from applicants in Europe, Argentina, Bolivia and Mexico.
The show is free of charge and encourages people to interact with “statues” that are much more dynamic than the static ones built in town squares across the world. According to Mayor Rahamim Malul, it’s also meant to introduce visitors to this Israeli city better known as the home of the Weizmann Institute of Science.
