Fuad Abu Hamed, a Palestinian businessman living in East Jerusalem, recently won the first Social Entrepreneurship Award from the Asper Foundation and Hebrew University for his work training young Arab women in business skills.
Businessman and social entrepreneur Fuad Abu Hamed is a Palestinian who may help to create a better future in the Middle East. Born in poverty in the East Jerusalem village of Sur Baher, he promised himself at a young age that his future would be different from that of the struggling people who surrounded him.
Fuad chose business, and starting from scratch he opened first one, and then a second successful medical clinic in his village.
He told ISRAEL21c that he believes that a business should serve a community’s needs and that a business rooted in the community has more chance of success.
Accepted to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as a teenager, he couldn’t afford to attend, but today is enrolled there, working toward a second degree in management and public policy.
At the university, with the help of the Asper Center for Entrepreneurship, he started the East Jerusalem Bis Camp, a unique series of business classes for Palestinian women, designed to grant them the skills and encouragement to start their own small businesses.
His hard work was recognized recently when he received the inaugural Social Entrepreneurship Award given jointly by the Asper Foundation and Hebrew University.
