Children love it, adults mostly hate it… it’s Lag BaOmer – the holiday of the bonfires.

The Jewish holiday celebrates the anniversary of the death of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a Michnaic sage from the 2nd Century.

One of the largest celebrations takes place at the tomb of Bar Yochai in the northern Israeli town of Meron where tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews congregate to light bonfires, sing and feast.

Elsewhere around the country it’s bonfire night on a huge scale, with thousands upon thousands of bonfires of all shapes and sizes taking place up and down the country on every spare patch of land imaginable.

If you’ve got a photograph you’d like to feature on ISRAEL21c please send it in high resolution to info@israel21c.org. Every week we will choose the best one to feature on our pages.
