Olympian swimmer Jonathan Koplev is not going to the London Games with the Israeli delegation. Despite hopes that he would make a ‘miraculous‘ recovery from his appendectomy on July 15, coach of Israel’s national swim team Leonid Kaufman said today that Koplev is in “bad condition.”

“He needs help standing up and his parents are sleeping by his side,” Kaufman told Ynet. “He needs weeks to recuperate and maybe even two months.”

Kaufman said the operation was supposed to take 20 minutes but hit a glitch and took nearly two hours.

Koplev was one of the swim team’s high hopes. The 20-year-old Haifa native was recently crowned European Champion in the 50-meter backstroke.

“He’s a very good friend of mine and it’s really difficult for me that he’s not coming with us,” swimmer Amit Ivry told Ynet. “We visited him in hospital. I wish him a speedy recovery and that he’ll return to the water soon. He’s very special to me.”

The swimming delegation – Nimrod Shapira Bar-On, Amit Ivry, Yakov-Yan Toumarkin, Imri Ganiel and Gal Nevo– leaves tomorrow for one last training camp before the Olympics begin.
