Heading out to nature for the Sukkot holiday? The American educational content giant Wikimedia wants you to take your camera with and shoot as many of Israel’s heritage sites as you can.
The online database’s “Wiki Loves Monuments” international photography competition is currently underway. The contest runs September 15 through October 15, simultaneously in 46 countries.
Israeli photographers snapped 6,067 pictures for last year’s competition.
Organizers have put up a list of heritage sites on the Wikimedia Commons website.
Israeli photographer Ronen Akerman, a representative of Wikipedia, leads the local judging panel. Ten of the best Israeli images will be sent to compete in the global event. The three top photos will also be awarded a monetary prize.
“Last year was the first time we held the ‘Wiki Loves Monuments ‘world photography competition, with thousands of photographs uploaded throughout the month. We are pleased to have been able to contribute to raising awareness of Israel’s heritage sites and the importance of their conservation. We expect again to see hundreds of participants touring the various sites across Israel, attending the photography workshops and uploading thousands of images of Israel which will then join the hundreds of thousands of images from all around the world that will be available to all for free on the Wikimedia Commons website,” said Dror Lin, project organizer.
Meanwhile, if you’re at the beach then snap your best shots for the ISRAEL21c photo contest now taking place.
