Waze directs Sandy-hit residents where to fuel up

Driving in New Jersey in the wake of Superstorm Sandy continues to be no easy feat, with persistent gas shortages, power outages and damage by flooding. So, the White House and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) turned to Waze, the Israeli app that offers real time traffic navigation updates, to help bring fuel to New Jersey residents suffering from the shortages.
“Using the crowdsourced information YOU provide, New Jersey Wazers can work together and direct each-other to stations that have fuel,” the company wrote on its blog.
Waze is hoping its user base will update the fuel levels, prices and how long the lines are at gas stations so others can tank up. The company said it would relay the information to the FEMA.
“Thank you for your help and cooperation,” the Waze blog reads. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those affected by the hurricane.”
