Korzits heads for medal race; Shatilov misses the mark

Israel’s hopes for a medal – any medal – now lie solely on the shoulders of windsurfer Lee Korzits after gymnast Alex Shatilov failed to snag the coveted prize this afternoon. Korzits will compete in the medal race of the RS:X event on Tuesday but is not guaranteed a place on the podium.

Korzits is still ranked second place overall despite two mediocre races today – a ninth place finish in the ninth race and an 11th place finish in the 10th race. Whereas her weekend sails put her three points out of first place, today she faltered down to 14 points behind Spain’s leader Marina Alabau Neira.

Israel’s other medal hope today was gymnast Shatilov. He finished in sixth place in the men’s individual floor exercises final with a score of 15.333. The gold medal went to Chinese gymnast Kai Zou, who also took the top honor at the Beijing Games.

Other Israelis to compete today included windsurfer Shahar Zubari, who is currently ranked 22nd in the men’s RS:X event with two preliminary races to go. Zubari, who was hoping to repeat his Beijing medal performance, is not expected to advance to the finals.

Laser Radial sailor Nufar Edelman finished her 10 races in 30th place overall earlier today and did not advance to the finals.

Sailors Vered Buskila and Gil Cohen are currently in ninth place overall after five races in the women’s 470 event – keep alive the hope for the finals on August 10.

Synchronized swimmers Anastasia Gloushkov and Inna Yoffe will take the plunge in the Qualification Technical Routine this evening.
