Jerusalem to host ice festival

It’s all about creativity and imagination as Jerusalem gets ready to turn its most famous sites into ice. The Jerusalem Municipality has announced its first-ever ice festival set for March-April 2012.
A huge 16,150 square-feet complex will be built in the city ahead of the festival, alongside ice skating rinks, a concert area and a bar made of ice.
Spring weather shouldn’t hamper the event as organizers say the entire complex will be operated at a temperature of minus 10 degrees centigrade.
Among the ice sculptures will be a frozen replica of the Tower of David, the Israel Museum and the Light Rail.
The Jerusalem Municipality says it expects hundreds of thousands of visitors from Israel and around the world to take part in this inaugural happening.
“The cultural revolution in Jerusalem will break new records this year,” says Mayor Nir Barkat. “The international ice festival joins the list of festivals held in the city which have already made a name for themselves around the world, such as the Opera Festival, the Arts and Crafts Fair and the Festival of Light.”
A group of 35 sculptors, lighting technicians, designers and builders are expected to arrive from China this month to set up the ice exhibition. After all, China is renowned for its original ice artwork.
Visitors are invited to watch the works-in-progress at the old train station plaza.
