Israeli judokas snag five medals in Europe

Yarden Gerbi, Tommy Arshansky win gold medals at European competitions over the weekend; teammates take three bronze medals as well.

It was a great weekend for Israeli judokas as the country’s young sportsmen and women won two gold medals and three bronze medals at two different European championships. Yarden Gerbi (U-57kg), entered the Moscow Grand Slam ranked first in the world in her weight category, and took the gold to prove she is still in top form.

Gerbi toppled opponents from Italy, Mongolia, Brazil and Holland to win first place.

Her teammates Gili Cohen and Roni Schwartz (U-52 kg) won two bronze medals in the same prominent contest.

Meanwhile at the European Cup in Germany, Tommy Arshansky (U-60 kg) snagged the coveted gold medal after defeating five opponents in the event.

His teammate Tal Flicker (U-66 kg) brought home Israel’s fifth medal of the weekend, a bronze.

“I’m proud of the national team and the progress we’ve [been] making this past year,” coach Oren Smadja told reporters.
