Get your sunscreen, sunshade, and swimwear ready, beach season in Israel officially begins today (May 1). Lifeguards are at their posts at 136 organized beaches along Israel’s sandy shores.

Although every day is a great beach day in Israel, the swimming season officially runs May 1 through October 23. During that time, municipalities must offer rescue and first aid services along its beaches.

Lifeguards will be on call at 88 beaches along the Mediterranean Sea, 27 sandy shores around the Sea of Galilee, 17 beaches at the Dead Sea, and four beaches at the Red Sea.

The beaches in Tel Aviv offer free WiFi and a portable library for those seeking good reads.

Israel’s sandy strips recently got an ego boost when it was announced that the country now boasts 21 beaches with the Blue Flag international honor.
