120-megawatt wind farm to be built on Golan Heights

Standing as tall as the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv, 50 new wind turbines are about to change the horizon in the Golan Heights. The Emek Habacha project — a 120-megawatt wind farm – recently got the OK to break ground.

At the moment, Israel has one six-megawatt wind farm at Tel Asania in the Golan Heights. The Ministry of Defense had objected to the construction of wind turbines in Israel over the years, citing disruption to Air Force operations, but has since overturned that decision.

Kinetic Energies – Alternative Electrical Energies is promoting the new €250 million project.

According to the plan, the wind turbines will be 130-meters high and will each generate 2.5 megawatts of energy.

The project is considered one of the biggest in the Middle East and is expected to go online in 2015.
