LA business and entertainment leaders aim to raise the bar at Maccabiah World GamesA group of Southern California-based business, entertainment and civic leaders have come together to create worldwide awareness and provide financial support for The 18th Maccabiah World Games – the quadrennial Jewish Olympics – which is set to kick off in Tel Aviv in July.
The Committee of 18, spearheaded by business and civic leader Steve Soboroff and supported by former Hollywood actor Kirk Douglas, will provide $1.5 million in financial support, as well as expertise in naming rights, marketing, merchandising and television. The organization plans to make this the first Maccabiah Games to be broadcast outside of Israel. It will be broadcast to 20 million households. The games, which bring together Jewish athletes from 65 countries, opens on July 13, and close on July 24th. “Los Angeles ushered the Olympics into a new era in 1984, and our goal is to do for the Maccabiah a small part of what Peter Ueberroth did for the Olympic Games,” Soboroff said.
