The Fourth Annual Jerusalem Light Festival, the largest event of its kind, opened this week. For artists who express their vision in light, this is an opportunity to change the Old City’s visage with color, pattern, light and shadow.

Tree of Life at Damascus Gate – Heinz Kasper (Austria/Germany)

Now in its fourth year, the event is now part of a prestigious list of light art festivals around the world, such as Lyon, Glasgow , Lisbon and others.

Lotus Dome at Zedekiah’s Cave – Daan Roosegaarde (Netherlands)

This year, the festival is hosting 12 internationally renowned artists., along with Israeli artists.

Guardian Angel at the Wall Amphitheater – Maro Avrabou and Dimitri Xenakis (France)

Photographers take note: In addition, the Festival of Light 2013 is holding a photo competition to be judged by Israel’s foremost professional photographers with cash prizes of NIS 2,000, NIS 3,000 and NIS 5,000.

The Rainbow Above at Muristan Square / Lutheran Church of the Redeemer – Eran Klein and Eli Cochavi (Israel)

There will also be an amateur photo competition for the “People’s Choice” award, where the public can vote for its favorite photograph. The winner will receive a digital camera. Click here to submit photos, see the entries and vote.

The Jerusalem Light Festival takes place in the Old City of Jerusalem between June 5th-13th 2013, each evening between 8pm and midnight.
