Five years of research and development, 37 patents and a specific species of red algae grown in Israel are packed into Clinique’s new Smart Custom-Repair Serum.

The product, which sells in Israel for NIS 640 for 50 milliliters ($60 for one fluid ounce in the US), is claimed to fight oxidative effects of aging via a sophisticated “skin distress signal launcher” that directs the appropriate components of the serum to the areas of the complexion that most need them.

“The potent red algae from the warm Israeli desert will soothe your skin, caffeine and licorice extract help reduce skin irritation, grape extract helps achieve an even complexion and so much more,” reads the promo for the pricey product.

The algae’s job seems to be readying the skin to be “receptive to repairs.”

In a corporate statement, Clinique explains that the serum offers revolutionary and targeted action addressing the changing needs of the skin.

“For more than five years, Clinique scientists conducted tests and learned how to combine and balance perfectly among the active ingredients and soothing ingredients. This is not a simple achievement. The result is a harmonious combination of elements integrated into the most powerful remedy — the best serum ever developed Clinique.”

Results of a 12-week study of women using the product showed “noticeable improvement in the treatment of uneven skin tone, dark spots, dull-looking skin, fine lines and wrinkles and firming.”
