Israel celebrated its first-ever official Burning Man festival, Midburn, in the Negev desert earlier this month.

Some 3,000 people set up camp deep in the Negev desert and for five days celebrated creativity, communal living and self-expression. The only thing on sale during the event was ice – because of the scorching heat.

The Midburn festival, which took place from June 3-7, was modeled on the annual Burning Man festival which takes places in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada in the US, every year.

Organizers of the event actually held two smaller versions of the Burning Man festival in 2012 and 2013 in Israel but cite that they were preparatory happenings for this year’s official festival.

Midburn was officially recognized and defined as a regional organization in 2013.
