US premium television network HBO has put into development the new drama mini-series, Bastards, which is based on Israeli show, Nevelot (Hebrew for ‘Bastards’).

The original story line follows two elderly Palmach vets (underground Jewish army during the British Mandate) who set out on a killing spree in Tel Aviv. The American version will change the Palmach vets to Vietnam vets, and Tel Aviv will turn into contemporary Miami.

The plot is based on the late Yoram Kaniuk’s novella, Vultures & Dead Flesh.

The project will be produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison film and television production company. Playwright Branden Jacobs Jenkins (Appropriate) is adapting the script to an American audience.

The 2010 Israeli thriller was created by Dror Sabo, Daphna Levin, Lee Yardeni and Aviram Buchris, and was produced by MYtv for the HOT network. It won numerous local industry awards.

Other popular Israeli television series to undergo an American makeover include Rising Star, Prisoners of War/Homeland, Hostages and Traffic Light.
