With nine Israeli performance artists invited to the Performance Art Biennial in New York, it’s clear that this genre is back in town.
Nine Israeli artists were selected to participate in last years’ Performance Art Bienniel in the US, at least two Israelis performed commissioned pieces, and the opening event in Times Square was the screening of a Hebrew film – all of which proves that Israeli performance art is thriving and achieving recognition abroad.
Performance art is a conceptual art, where the artist uses different media to communicate ideas to the audience. The artists approach their pieces with a sense that there are infinite possibilities open to them – film, sculpture, painting, dance, or endless combinations of all of these. Performance artists use time, space, themselves and collaborations to express their ideas.
Rivka Saker, chairwoman of Sothebys Israel and founder of Artis, a nonprofit organization that supports and promotes Israeli contemporary art throughout the world, says, “I think there is a whole group of Israeli artists that are promising … and the world looks toward them to see new and different ways of expression…”
Gallery curators like Cicilia Domani from the cutting edge X-Factor Gallery in Chelsea, are interested in the work that Israeli artists are developing and enjoy showing their work as does Rosalee Goldberg, founder and curator of Performance 09 in New York.
