Tel Aviv has been turned into an enormous art gallery as hundreds of artists take part in the city’s first Art Tel Aviv Biennial, a month-long art happening launched as part of the city’s centennial celebrations.
Whether its sculptures, posters, video installations or paintings, Tel Aviv is bursting with art this month as the Mediterranean city launches its first ever Art Tel Aviv Biennial.
The September Month of Art was launched as part of Tel Aviv’s centennial celebrations, and included dozens of artistic events in exhibition halls and public spaces all over the city. Over two hundred private studios were opened to the public and art exhibitions were held in every nook and cranny.
The biennial was timed to coincide with the Athens and Istanbul biennials, to foster artistic experimentation and exchange in the region. Much of the artwork dealt with myths, materials and concepts that examine the layers of the modern city.
One of the most unique events of the month was the “flower carpet” donated to the city of Tel Aviv by the city of Brussels, to mark the Israeli city’s centennial. Flowers were shipped by air to Tel Aviv and meticulously laid out to create a spectacular tapestry in one of the city’s main squares.
Johanan, a Tel Aviv artist and gallery owner, opined that “Tel Aviv has become, as it should be, a city of cultural focus. And that is a very powerful thing.”
