Israeli teams yesterday rescued a woman who had been trapped for six days under the wreckage of Port-au-Prince's university in Haiti. The woman was transferred to the Israel Defense Force (IDF) field hospital for medical treatment.
According to Israel's Channel 10 TV news, international rescue teams asked Israeli rescue teams to help rescue victims trapped in the rubble of the four-storey university building in the southern part of the capital. The international team had managed to rescue one survivor.
Using special equipment the Israeli team lifted off rubble and managed to create an opening, while preventing the whole structure from collapsing. The team was able to see the woman through the opening and successfully rescue her.
Both survivors had been trapped under the rubble for six days. Fortunately, air pockets had formed around them and rescue teams found them before they ran out of oxygen.
The female student received first aid on the spot, before being transferred to the Israeli field hospital. Her condition is stable but her left leg may have to be amputated.
Earlier yesterday, a six-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble by locals and rushed to the Israeli clinic where doctors treated her and then transferred her to the IDF field hospital for further treatment.
